CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

When Skye was back in the FJ Cruiser after working out a schedule with Patrick, she sat with both hands atop the steering wheel, trying to control the trembling that had taken over her body.

Yes, she was back in retail sales again. Back to nights and weekends. Back to crappy pay. Yes, it was only part-time, and she was starting at the bottom, still making less than what she deserved at thirty-six years old. Yes, she was still in Billings, Montana, single and alone.

Except instead of a dead end, the job was a stepping stone. A springboard. She wasn’t settling, but choosing.

And wasn’t alone. She could hardly wait to share her news with Harvey. She started to text him, but then deleted it and put her phone away because she also realized she wanted to tell him in person.

She wanted to tell Harvey first. Not Vance. Not Julie. Not Summer.

Harvey.

The cognizance of it practically brought her to tears. She felt as if she were about to jump off Sacrifice Cliff, which Harvey had pointed out to her on the way back from one of their jobs. She had a parachute, but it didn’t promise a smooth landing.

Skye put the FJ in gear, jerked the car out of the parking space more than backed up, and tried to handle the beast back to the condo, where she texted to let Harvey know that she would pick him up when he was ready.

How did it go? he texted back.

I’ll tell you when I see you, she replied. It was a bit of a tease, but she didn’t want to ruin the moment later.

An hour later, she met him at the job site, helped him load all his paint paraphernalia, and eagerly convened to the passenger’s seat where she belonged, making a mental note to start searching for a lease agreement with no money down at a Honda dealership, given that she wasn’t planning to stay for more than a year. After all, she could neither drive this big boxy monster again nor expect Harvey to chauffeur her; what’s more, she hadn’t mentioned to Patrick that she didn’t have a car. He didn’t ask. Should she have disclosed that? Would Patrick have changed his mind about hiring her if she did?

Harvey settled into the driver’s seat after pushing it back and readjusting the mirrors—she’d forgotten to do that—and turned to her before putting the car in gear. He looked nervous, like he’d been living in suspense all day and couldn’t take another second of waiting.

“Well?” he asked as he steeled himself, his tone indicating that he was hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

She grinned ear-to-ear.

“All right!” he cheered. “Congratulations!” He high-fived her. And then, without warning, he crossed over to pull her to him in a lopsided hug.

His gesture sent her heartbeat into a drumroll. She wanted more—God, she’d gone from never wanting even a glance in her direction from another man to wanting Harvey to know every part of her, from the crevices of her body to the crevices of her heart.
